On Friday morning, May 4, at 07:53, Station 55 was dispatched to the report of a wire down on a vehicle on Rickenbach Road. The driver was reported to be inside the vehicle. Engine 55 responded.
Upon arrival, Engine 55 found that a Ford Focus, on a non-public dirt road off of Rickenbach Road, had become entangled in a downed electrical wire. There was an occupant in the driver’s seat.
Leesport Co. 37 and Temple Co. 11 were already on scene. Using a high sensitivity voltage detector, or “Hot Stick”, it had been determined that the wire was energized. Crews on scene instructed the occupant of the vehicle to remain in the vehicle until Met-Ed could arrive on scene to de-energize the wire.
A Met-Ed lineman arrived around 08:30, de-energized the wire, and untangled the wire from the vehicle. The driver was uninjured; the vehicle was undamaged, and it was able to be driven from the scene.
It was unclear how the wire had come down, but a logging crew removing trees in the vicinity may have been involved.
