At 10:45 on Tuesday, April 10, Engine 55 was dispatched to the report of a utility pole on fire on Ulrich Lane behind Empire Surplus.
When Engine 55 arrived on scene the crew found that the insulation on the high voltage wires on a utility pole were on fire.
The role of firefighters at a pole or transformer fire is to cordon off the area around the fire and let it burn until Met-Ed arrives to deal with the situation. The E55 crew, along with Mt. Pleasant Engine 30 and the Bern Township Police did just that; they closed Ulrich Lane and notified Met-Ed of the situation.
Several businesses in the area were without power until repairs could be completed. There was no property damage and no one was injured.
Ulrich Lane remained closed until Met-Ed completed repairs.
