The Greenfields Fire Co., along with numerous companies from throughout Berks County, was dispatched to the report of a structure fire in the 600 block of Scenic Drive shortly after 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Upon arrival the GFC Crew found an attached 3 car garage fully involved in fire. With hydrants unavailable in the area and fearing that the attached home would become involved, GFC Chief Brian Fisher declared a second alarm and requested the activation of the Zone 2 Tanker Task Force. Fire crews on scene were able to get the fire under control within a half an hour, and managed to save the attached single family residence from any involvement. The garage and the single vehicle inside the garage were destroyed.
No one was injured in the incident; however the residents of the property were unable to continue occupancy due to power being shut off in order to fight the fire.
The Bern Township Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze. No cause for the fire, or damage estimates are currently available.
Mutual aid companies were released around 3:30 p.m. and the scene was turned over to Berks Fire and Water, who secured the structure around 5:00 p.m.
Those responding for the GFC were: Chief Brian Fisher; Deputy Chief Phil Haupt; Assistant Chief Scott Trate; Capt. Mahlon Auker; Jr. FF Dylan Matz; Fire Police Capt. Charlie Kerschner; Support Unit Member Leigh-Ann Matz; and Photographer Steve Spies.
