On Wednesday, December 14, @ 12:03, the GFC received a dispatch that reported a tree had fallen across Stephen Road in Greenfields Manor. E55 responded with Chief Brian Fisher at the helm, and a crew of 2.
Upon arrival, the E55 crew found that a 50+ foot pine tree had fallen across the 100 block of Stephen Road, blocking vehicle passage. The GFC crew’s task was to get the tree off the road so that residents on Stephen Rd. could have access to their homes.
FF Gary Rarick, using a chain saw, first removed the branches from the tree. Once the tree was cleaned of branches, a tow chain was choked around the top end of the tree while the other end of the tow chain was attached a tow hook on the front of Brush 55 (Brush 55 had been retrieved from the station during the call). Brush 55 was then able to drag the tree to a point parallel to the curb, thus opening Stephen Rd. to traffic.
Examination of the tree indicated that it had been dead for quite some time. Its root ball had rotted away to the point where it could no longer support the tree in its upright position, and the tree fell.
