At 00:48 on December 30th the GFC, along with apparatus from West Reading Co. 64, Temple Co. 11, Mt. Pleasant Co. 30, Wyomissing Co. 79, Goodwill Co. 10, Township of Spring Co. 85 and Reading Engine 7 were dispatched to a structure fire in the 300 block of Morrison Road in Greenfields.
When the GFC crew arrived on scene they found there was no fire, however a carbon monoxide alarm had been activated. All mutual aid companies except Reading Engine 7 were recalled.
Upon entering the residence the firefighter’s CO alarms began to alert. The residents of the structure were immediately evacuated and a CO gas meter was employed to take measurements of CO levels inside the home. CO levels in excess of 35 ppm were found to be present throughout the residence.
The source of the CO was found to be malfunctioning oil fired boiler. The oil burner was disabled and the homeowner was advised to have it serviced before using it again.
Fans were employed to ventilate the structure and once the CO levels were reduced to zero the residents were allowed to occupy their home.
Those responding for the GFC were: Deputy Chief Mahlon Auker; FF Ryan Noll; Probationary FF Justin Conrad; Fire Police Lt. Jeff Allen; Photographer Steve Spies.
