At 07:13 Tuesday morning the GFC received a dispatch to respond to a 2 vehicle MVA, with entrapment, at the intersection of northbound Rt. 183 and West Leesport Rd. Companies from West Reading Co. 64, Bernville Co. 29, Mt. Pleasant Co. 30 and Temple Co. 11 responded to assist.
Upon arrival the GFC crew found that a Buick Skylark sedan and a Chevy utility van had collided in the intersection, leaving the driver of the Buick trapped inside.
Crew members immediately began rescue operations by stabilizing the Buick and its driver while others employed the “Jaws of Life” in order to extricate the patient. The vehicle’s roof and driver’s side door had to be removed in order to extricate the patient. After about 15 minutes of work, firefighters were able to extricate the patient, who was turned over to Western Berks Ambulance for transport to the Reading Hospital’s Trauma Center.
The injuries to the Buick driver were not specified. There were no other injuries.
Bern Township Fire Police directed traffic through the scene and traffic flow was not significantly impaired. Once the vehicles were removed by V&M Towing, and the GFC crew cleaned up the debris, normal traffic flow was resumed. Crews were released around 08:15.
