Dylan Matz joined the Greenfields Fire Co. as a Junior Firefighter in 2012, at the age of 14 after sending Chief Brian Fisher an essay he had written on why he wanted to be a firefighter. Now, after sticking it out for 4 years of hard work, hazing, and outgrowing 2 sets of turnout gear, he has been awarded the rank of Exterior Firefighter.
The honor and recognition of his achievement was bestowed upon him at his surprise 18th birthday party last Sunday, which was held at the Greenfields Station on Sunday, December 11th.
Doing the honor of retiring Dylan’s Junior Firefighter helmet, and presenting him with his Greenfields Exterior Firefighter helmet was Greenfields’ Fire Chief Brian Fisher. Chief Fisher congratulated Dylan on his hard work and tenacity. Chief Fisher explained that this was Dylan’s first milestone in what he hoped would be a long and safe journey as a volunteer, or perhaps even as a career firefighter.
