At 00:07 on Monday morning, November 15th, the GFC received 2nd alarm dispatch to assist with a structure fire in the 3700 block of Harrison Ave. in Muhlenberg Township.
Engine 55 left the GFC Station at approximately 00:15 and was on scene by 00:27. Upon arrival Engine 55 staged at Harrison Ave. and Beach St., about 3 houses south of the scene. Once there, they found a 2 story split level residence showing fire and smoke from all four sides of the structure. The crew immediately reported to the manpower pool and awaited instructions.
During the early morning hours, the GFC worked with companies from around Berks County to assist Goodwill Co.10 with firefighting activities, overhaul, and cleanup. The fire was under control around 02:00 and the GFC was released sometime after 04:00.
According to the Reading Eagle, a married couple, their toddler, and their dog were in the residence at the time the fire started. An observant neighbor noticed the fire and was able to alert the family, who was then able escape the flames. The mother and her child exited the structure unharmed; however the father suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken to a local area hospital for treatment. The family dog unfortunately perished.
The structure was gutted. An estimate of damage is not yet available and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Special thanks are in order for the Salvation Army Canteen which provided refreshments to the firefighting crews.
