Shortly after 13:15, while at a call for wires down on Grange Road and Seifrit Lane, the GFC received a dispatch for an MVA with entrapment on Rt. 183 at Mt. Pleasant Road in Penn Township. The GFC crew on scene turned the wires down call over to Bern Township Fire Police and proceeded to the Penn Township MVA.
Upon arrival the Engine 55 crew found that a southbound box truck on Rt. 183 had collided with an oversize load being hauled northbound. The box truck was parked on the southbound shoulder with the driver trapped inside.
The Engine 55 crew pulled E-55’s trash line and stood by in case of a vehicle fire. Using the “Jaws of Life”, the GFC crew assisted Mt. Pleasant Rescue 30 with the extrication of the patient. Once freed, the patient was transported by Northern Berks Ambulance to a local area hospital with unspecified, but non-life threatening injuries.
Bern Township Fire Police closed the section of Rt. 183 at Mt. Pleasant Road and routed traffic around the scene. Rt. 183 was reduced to one lane for about 2 hours until the wreckage could be cleared from the highway.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
