The Greenfields firefighters, along with approximately 20 other fire companies from as far away as Lancaster County, were dispatched to assist Western Berks Co. 18 battling brush fires on the south side of Rt. 422 in the Wernersville area Tuesday afternoon.
Upon arrival, Brush 55 and Engine 55 were directed to an area behind the Precision Landscaping Co. near Sportsman Rd., where several brush fires threatened structures on their property. Other companies were also busy fighting at least 4 other brush fires in an area along the north side of the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks. These tracks run parallel to Rt. 422.
It is suspected that the fires were started by a passing Norfolk Southern freight train. Norfolk Southern suspended rail traffic during the incident so firefighters could lay their hoses across the tracks.
GFC remained on scene until around 8:30 p.m. when they were released by Western Berks Command.
Those responding for the GFC were: Chief Brian Fisher, Deputy Chief Phil Haupt, Assistant Chief Scott Trate, FF Dave Steffey, FF Gary Rarick, FF Joe Green, Probationary FF Dalton Noll, Jr. FF Dylan Matz, Fire Police Officer Jeff Allen, and Photographer Steve Spies.
