Crewmembers from the Greenfields Fire Co., along with other crews from fire companies around the County, were dispatched Friday afternoon to aid Mt. Pleasant Co. 30 with fighting a fire at Rics Marine on Bernville Rd. in Penn Twp.
Upon arrival, the Engine 55 crew found thick black smoke billowing from the storage yard behind Rics Marine. A fire, which had started in a trailer at the boatyard, had spread to a storage trailer and 3 boats.
Fire crews battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control. Fire crews were hampered by a lack of water, which had to be shuttled by tankers that were filled at The T&C Market, a 4 mile round trip.
Fire Police had shut down Rt. 183 between Hill Rd. and Plum Creek Rd. Normal traffic flow was restored by 5:00 p.m.
The fire is believed to have started in a space heater in the trailer. No estimate of damage was available, but the trailers and boats involved were totally destroyed.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries.
Those responding for the GFC were: Chief Brian Fisher, Deputy Chief Phil Haupt, FF Matt Haggard, Jr. FF Dylan Matz, Fire Police Officer Jeff Allen, and Photographer Steve Spies.
It is noteworthy to mention that Jr. FF Dylan Matz, having no transportation, boarded a BARTA bus at Windsor St. and Schuylkill Ave. in order to get to the GFC fire station for the call. From there he was able to respond with another firefighter, FF Matt Haggard, who drove his POV to the fire scene.
